Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Occupational Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Workplace HIV testing is underutilized but can access high-risk populations.
  • The construction sector presents an opportunity for targeted HIV testing initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the Test@Work intervention, a workplace HIV testing program for construction workers in the UK.
  • Assess the reach, effectiveness, adoption, and maintenance of workplace HIV testing.

Main Methods:

  • The RE-AIM framework guided the evaluation of the Test@Work intervention.
  • Intervention included an online health toolkit, general health checks, and opt-in HIV consultation/testing.
  • Data collected via worker (n=426) and manager (n=15) questionnaires, with qualitative analysis.

Main Results:

  • High uptake of HIV testing (82%) among health check participants, with 78% being first-time testers.
  • Most workers found workplace HIV testing acceptable and reported positive health behavior intentions.
  • Company recruitment was challenging, with a focus on larger organizations.

Conclusions:

  • Opt-in HIV testing within general health checks is highly acceptable and effective in the UK construction sector.
  • This approach successfully reaches individuals at risk for HIV who might not otherwise seek testing.
  • Further research is needed to determine cost-effectiveness.
