Household Wiring And Electrical Safety01:13

Household Wiring And Electrical Safety

1.4K
Companies that supply power to most modern households use three conductors, typically called a three-wire line. While one is neutral, the other two are both at 120 V but with opposite polarity, giving a voltage of 240 V between them. With a three-wire line, high-power appliances that require 240 V, such as electric stoves and clothes dryers, are linked between the two hot lines. 120 V appliances can be connected between the neutral and either of the hot lines. The neutral side, which is always...

Electrical Power01:07

Electrical Power

3.3K
Electric power is the product of current and voltage, represented in units of joules per second, or watts. For example, cars often have one or more auxiliary power outlets with which you can charge a cell phone or other electronic devices. These outlets may be rated at 20 amps and 12 volts, so that the circuit can deliver a maximum power of 240 watts. Consider a 25 Watt bulb and a 60 Watt bulb. The conversion of electrical energy produces heat and light, while the kinetic energy lost by the...

Insulation Coordination01:23

Insulation Coordination

253
Insulation coordination is the process of matching electric equipment's insulation strength with protective device characteristics to protect the equipment against expected overvoltages. This selection is based on engineering judgment and cost. Equipment can generally withstand short-duration high transient overvoltages, but repeated tests with identical waveforms can yield inconsistent results. As a result, standard impulse voltage waveforms are used for testing, defined by specific times...

Electrical Current01:10

Electrical Current

6.1K
Electrical current is defined as the rate at which charge flows. When there is a large current present, such as that used to run a refrigerator, a large amount of charge moves through the wire in a small amount of time. If the current is small, such as that used to operate a handheld calculator, a small amount of charge moves through the circuit over a long period of time. The SI unit for current is the ampere (A), named for the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836).

Electrical Energy01:10

Electrical Energy

1.4K
Using electric appliances for a longer period of time consumes more electrical energy and results in a higher electric bill. The energy produced by the transfer of electrons from one point to another is known as electrical energy. If power is delivered at a constant rate, the electrical energy can be defined as the product of power used by the device for a period of time. The energy unit on electric bills is the kilowatt-hour, where one kilowatt-hour is equivalent to 3.6 × 106 joules.

Introduction to Epidemiology01:26

Introduction to Epidemiology

1.2K
Epidemiology, known as the cornerstone of public health, involves studying the distribution and determinants of health-related events in defined populations and applying these insights to control health issues. This is essential for understanding how diseases spread, identifying populations at greater risk, and implementing measures to control or prevent outbreaks. Epidemiology addresses not only infectious diseases but also non-communicable conditions like cancer and cardiovascular disease,...

Summary

Most electrical burn injuries in Iran occur in the workplace due to high-voltage electricity, particularly affecting construction workers. Prevention strategies should focus on high-risk work environments to reduce these severe accidents.

Area of Science:

  • Traumatology
  • Epidemiology
  • Burn Surgery

Background:

  • Electrical injuries are uncommon but severe burns with significant disability potential.
  • Understanding the epidemiology of electrical accidents is crucial for effective prevention planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the epidemiology of electrical burn injuries.
  • To identify risk factors and common causes of electrical accidents in a specific region.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted.
  • Data from patients with electrical burns at Shahid Motahari Educational and Medical Center (2017-2018) were analyzed.
  • Demographic and accident-related information was collected using a researcher-made form.

Main Results:

  • The majority of electrical accidents occurred in the workplace involving high-voltage electricity.
  • Contact with overhead cables and wires was the most frequent cause of injury.
  • Excision and graft surgeries were the most common surgical interventions.
  • Significant relationships were found between voltage type and sex, age, hospital stay, and job type (P < .05).
  • Construction workers, predominantly male, were the main group injured by high-voltage electricity and had longer hospital stays.
  • Significant relationships were observed between job type and sex, nationality, hospital stay, and accident cause (P < .05).

Conclusions:

  • Construction workers in Iran are at the highest risk for electrical injuries.
  • Targeted prevention methods, especially in high-risk work settings, are recommended.
  • Further extensive research is needed to develop and implement practical prevention strategies for electrical injuries.
