1National Bureau of Standards, Washington, DC 20234.
A comparison between the Laboratoire National d'Essais (LNE) and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) piston gages showed excellent agreement in pressure measurements. Results were well within the expected uncertainty, confirming reliable pressure calibration methods.
Area of Science:
- Metrology
- Pressure Measurement Standards
Background:
- Accurate pressure calibration is crucial for industrial and scientific applications.
- Intercomparison of primary and transfer standard piston gages ensures measurement traceability and consistency.
Purpose of the Study:
- To intercompare a transfer piston gage from LNE with a primary standard piston gage from NBS.
- To validate the effective area computation and pressure generation capabilities of the LNE gage.
Main Methods:
- Performed an intercomparison of piston gages over a pressure range of 0.4 to 3.9 MPa.
- Calculated the effective area of the LNE gage using data from both laboratories.
- Averaged the pressures generated by the two piston gages for comparison.
Main Results:
- Agreement in effective area computation between LNE and NBS was within 6.4 ppm.
- Agreement in average generated pressures was within 3.3 ppm.
- Both results were significantly better than the estimated uncertainties (NBS: 30 ppm, LNE: 24 ppm).
Conclusions:
- The LNE transfer piston gage demonstrates high accuracy and reliability.
- The intercomparison validates the metrological capabilities of the LNE gage against a primary standard.
- This study supports international consistency in pressure metrology.
