Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Orthopedics
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Pediatric Endocrinology

Background:

  • Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a hip condition affecting adolescents.
  • SCFE can lead to significant morbidity if not managed promptly.
  • Surgical intervention is often required for SCFE treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze surgical cases of SCFE at Hospital Risoleta Tolentino Neves (HRTN) from 2016-2019.
  • To identify demographic, procedural, and complication patterns in pediatric SCFE patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of SCFE patients treated surgically at HRTN.
  • Data collected included gender, age, affected side, surgical procedure, and complications.
  • Study period: January 2016 to January 2019.

Main Results:

  • 21 patients underwent SCFE surgery.
  • Majority were female (57%), mean age 12 years.
  • 80% presented with chronic/acute-on-chronic epiphysis; avascular necrosis occurred in 33%.

Conclusions:

  • SCFE is linked to high patient morbidity.
  • Early diagnosis and endocrine evaluation are vital.
  • Appropriate surgical management improves clinical and functional outcomes.
