Summary
COVID-19 infection can cause acute pancreatitis. This study presents three cases of acute pancreatitis in patients with COVID-19, highlighting the virus as a potential cause of pancreatic injury.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Infectious Diseases
- Virology
Background:
- Viral infections are recognized causes of acute pancreatitis.
- The SARS-CoV-2 virus has been implicated in pancreatic injury, potentially leading to acute pancreatitis.
Observation:
- Three patients aged 63-87 years with no prior pancreatitis history were diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and COVID-19.
- Diagnosis followed revised Atlanta criteria; other etiologies were ruled out.
- Patients were unvaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 and received supportive care, with a mean hospital stay of 4 days.
Findings:
- Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed in three COVID-19 positive patients.
- No other risk factors for pancreatitis were identified in these cases.
- One patient had mild hypertriglyceridemia and was on low-dose atorvastatin, a low-risk factor for pancreatitis.
Implications:
- These cases support the hypothesis that SARS-CoV-2 can cause acute pancreatitis.
- Further global research is needed to establish a definitive causal link between COVID-19 and acute pancreatitis.
- This adds to the growing body of evidence linking viral infections to pancreatic damage.

Acute Pancreatitis II: Clinical Manifestations and Management
325
Acute pancreatitis presents a complex medical emergency characterized by rapid onset inflammation of the pancreas, demanding timely diagnosis and management to prevent complications. The condition primarily manifests through severe upper abdominal pain that often radiates to the back. This pain intensifies following the consumption of fatty foods. Accompanying symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, fever, dyspnea, cyanosis, and jaundice can vary in intensity but significantly...

The pancreas, an elongated and flat gland situated behind the stomach, serves a vital function in digesting food and managing blood sugar levels.

Acute Pancreatitis I: Introduction

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach. It can be either acute or chronic.
Acute pancreatitis is characterized by rapid inflammation of the pancreas, often caused by factors like gallstone blockage or excessive alcohol consumption. Chronic pancreatitis, on the other hand, is a slow, progressive inflammation that may result from long-term alcohol abuse, obstructions in the pancreatic duct, or genetic factors.
The causes of acute pancreatitis include:

The pancreas, an essential organ in the human body, is a pinkish-gray elongated structure located posterior to the stomach. It extends laterally from the duodenum towards the spleen and is firmly bound to the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity. The organ's surface has a lumpy, lobular texture that gives it a unique appearance.
The broad head of the pancreas lies within the loop formed by the duodenum, while its slender body reaches towards the spleen. The tail of the pancreas is short...
