    Summary

Older adults, especially those in nursing homes, frequently develop root caries. Poor oral hygiene and medications causing dry mouth significantly predict root caries in this population.

    Area of Science:

    • Geriatric Dentistry
    • Oral Health Research
    • Caries Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Root caries is a significant oral health issue in older adults.
    • Factors influencing root caries in the elderly require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the association between overall health, medication use, oral hygiene, and root caries in older adults.
    • To identify key predictors of root caries in a geriatric population.

    Main Methods:

    • Oral examinations and interviews were conducted on 47 older adults (24 community-dwelling, 23 nursing home residents).
    • The Oral Hygiene Index and Root Caries Index were utilized.
    • Data on overall health status and medication history were collected.

    Main Results:

    • The majority of participants (42/47) exhibited root surface caries.
    • Mandibular teeth, particularly molars and premolars, were most affected.
    • Predictors of root caries included remaining teeth, calculus, plaque, and xerogenic medications.

    Conclusions:

    • Older adults, particularly those in nursing homes, are at high risk for root caries.
    • Xerogenic medications are strongly associated with root caries, especially on maxillary teeth.
    • Interceptive dental care is crucial for high-risk geriatric populations, including those on multiple medications with poor oral hygiene.
