Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Polymer Chemistry
  • Photochemistry

Background:

  • Photochromic materials exhibit reversible color change upon light exposure.
  • Unsaturated bonds make photochromic molecules susceptible to degradation from pH, oxygen, ions, and solvents.
  • Microencapsulation offers a protective barrier for sensitive photochromic compounds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prepare photochromic microcapsules with enhanced stability.
  • To investigate the effect of formulation parameters on microcapsule properties.
  • To evaluate the protective role of a photostabilizer.

Main Methods:

  • Interfacial polymerization to create polyurea-shelled microcapsules with a 3,3-Diphenyl-3H-naphtho[2,1-b] pyran (NP) core.
  • Incorporation of bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate (HALS 770) as a photostabilizer.
  • Characterization using FTIR, particle size analysis, SEM, TGA, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry.

Main Results:

  • Uniform microcapsules (approx. 0.56 μm) achieved with <15% oil phase, 0.4% emulsifier, and 1800 rpm stirring.
  • Optimal thermal stability observed at a 1:1 core/shell ratio.
  • Photostabilizer minimally affected color change but significantly improved UV resistance.

Conclusions:

  • Polyurea microencapsulation effectively protects photochromic NP dyes from environmental degradation.
  • Optimized conditions yield uniform, stable photochromic microcapsules.
  • Photostabilizer addition enhances UV durability without compromising photochromic performance.
