Effects of Creep01:25

Effects of Creep

248
Creep in concrete, the gradual deformation under prolonged stress, significantly impacts the integrity of structures. For reinforced concrete beams, it can be a vital design consideration, as it increases deflection, sometimes necessitating additional design measures. In columns, especially slender ones under eccentric loads, creep can cause buckling, compromising their stability. However, creep can be beneficial in indeterminate structures by mitigating stresses that arise from shrinkage,...

Position-effect Variegation

In 1928, a German botanist Emil Heitz observed the moss nuclei with a DNA binding dye. He observed that while some chromatin regions decondense and spread out in the interphase nucleus, others do not. He termed them euchromatin and heterochromatin, respectively. He proposed that the heterochromatin regions reflect a functionally inactive state of the genome. It was later confirmed that heterochromatin is transcriptionally repressed, and euchromatin is transcriptionally active chromatin.

Central Tendency: Analysis01:10

Central Tendency: Analysis

270
Measures of central tendency are tools used in biostatistics to identify the average or center of a dataset. They offer a single representative value for understanding and summarizing data distribution.
The mean is one such measure, calculated by totaling all values in a dataset and dividing by the number of values. For instance, the mean blood pressure reading (120, 130, 140, 150) would be 135. However, the mean can be affected by extreme values or outliers.
The median, another measure,...

Time-Series Graph00:54

Time-Series Graph

4.7K
A time-series graph is a line graph with repeated measurements taken at successive intervals of time. It is also called a time series chart. To construct a time-series graph, one must look at both pieces of a paired data set. The horizontal axis is used to plot the time increments, and the vertical axis is used to plot the values of the variable that one is measuring. By using the axes in this way, each point on the graph will correspond to time and a measured quantity. The points on the graph...

Multiple Bar Graph01:07

Multiple Bar Graph

8.4K
As the name suggests, a multiple bar graph is the same as a bar graph but has multiple bars to depict relationships between different data values. One can include as many parameters as possible. However, each parameter must have the same unit of measurement.
Each bar or column in the multiple bar graph represents a data value. These graphs are used primarily in interrelating two or more sets of data. The categories of different kinds of data are listed along the horizontal or x-axis, whereas...

Relative Motion Analysis - Velocity01:24

Relative Motion Analysis - Velocity

486
A stroke engine has a slider-crank mechanism that converts rotational motion from the crank into linear motion of the slider or vice versa. This mechanism consists of three main parts: the crank, the connecting rod, and the slider.
When an external force is exerted, it sets the crank into a rotational movement. This, in turn, instigates the motion of the connecting rod, leading to what is referred to as a general plane motion. This process involves two key points - point A on the connecting rod...

Summary

Public interest in cosmetic surgery, particularly procedures above the neck, significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This surge in interest in aesthetic procedures coincided with increased video-chatting usage.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Cosmetic Procedures
  • Public Health Trends

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic led to increased video-chatting, correlating with heightened appearance concerns.
  • Initial lockdown measures saw a decrease in aesthetic and cosmetic plastic surgery case volumes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze public interest in aesthetic procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic using Google Trends data.
  • To investigate the hypothesis that public interest in plastic surgery, especially facial procedures, increased due to the pandemic.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Google Trends data from January 2015 to March 2021 for the United States.
  • Normalized search volumes and applied bivariate regression analysis to identify significant changes post-lockdown.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant increases (P < 0.000) in search volumes observed for numerous procedures after February 2020, including blepharoplasty, Botox, rhinoplasty, and brow lifts.
  • A significant association (chi-squared = 4.812, P = 0.028) was found between increased search volume and above-the-shoulder procedures.

Conclusions:

  • Public interest in above-the-shoulder cosmetic surgery procedures significantly rose post-February 2020 compared to below-the-shoulder procedures.
  • Further research correlating procedure trends with consumer mindset and video-conferencing's role is warranted.
