Novel Formative Approach of the ESAP-ITE Provides Strong Predictive Value for ABIM Certification Outcomes

Background:

• The Endocrine Self-Assessment Program In-Training Examination (ESAP-ITE) offers a unique formative learning approach with open access to questions and answers post-administration.
• A new ESAP-ITE is developed annually, providing current and relevant assessment content for endocrine fellows.

Observation:

• This study investigated the predictive value of ESAP-ITE scores for outcomes on the American Board of Internal Medicine Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Certification Examination (ABIM-ECE).
• Data from 982 endocrine fellows between 2016-2019 were analyzed, focusing on the final fellowship year ESAP-ITE scores and subsequent ABIM-ECE attempts.
• Multivariable logistic regression was employed, considering covariates such as sex, age, medical school origin, fellowship region, and prior Internal Medicine board certification outcomes.

Findings:

• ESAP-ITE scores were a significant predictor of passing the ABIM-ECE (P < 0.001).
• A strong correlation was observed: a 75% ESAP-ITE score predicted a 97% pass probability for the ABIM-ECE, while a 50% score predicted only a 70% probability.
• Age and prior success on the ABIM Internal Medicine Certification Examination also predicted ABIM-ECE outcomes, whereas sex, fellowship region, and medical school country did not.

Implications:

• The ESAP-ITE serves as a valuable learning tool for endocrine fellowship programs.
