Teeth01:15

Teeth

941
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Assessment of the Mouth01:26

Assessment of the Mouth

531
A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.
Mouth Inspection
The inspection begins with visually examining the mouth for symmetry, color, and size.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation II: ACLS Airway Management

199
Airway management is a key skill in emergency and critical care settings, as maintaining a clear airway is essential for adequate oxygenation and ventilation.Head Tilt-Chin Lift TechniqueThe head tilt-chin lift maneuver is an essential technique primarily used in patients without suspected cervical spine injuries. To perform this maneuver, one hand is placed on the patient’s forehead, and gentle pressure is applied backward to tilt the head. The fingertips of the other hand are positioned...

Tooth Anatomy

1.3K
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment01:28

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

889
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

    Summary

Adult anterior open bite (AOB) orthodontic treatment shows high stability and patient satisfaction, irrespective of the chosen treatment or retainer method. Factors like extractions and initial lower incisor position influenced stability in fixed appliance cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthodontics
    • Dental Research
    • Patient Outcomes

    Background:

    • Anterior open bite (AOB) presents a complex orthodontic challenge in adults.
    • Long-term stability and patient satisfaction are crucial metrics for evaluating AOB treatment efficacy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the post-treatment stability and patient satisfaction in adults with anterior open bite (AOB).
    • To identify patient and practitioner factors associated with treatment stability and satisfaction.

    Main Methods:

    • 112 adult AOB patients were evaluated at a mean of 1.21 years post-treatment.
    • Stability assessed via post-treatment intraoral photographs; satisfaction via questionnaires.
    • Treatments included aligners, fixed appliances, TADs, and orthognathic surgery; extractions and retention types/regimens were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Overall treatment stability ranged from 65% to 89%.
    • No significant differences in stability or satisfaction were found across different treatment modalities or retention types/regimens.
    • Extractions and reduced initial lower incisor proclination correlated with better stability in fixed appliance treatments.

    Conclusions:

    • Adult AOB orthodontic treatment demonstrates high stability and patient satisfaction.
    • Treatment and retainer choices did not significantly impact long-term stability or satisfaction levels.
