    Summary

    This study found little evidence linking formaldehyde exposure to increased cancer mortality in industrial workers. Overall mortality and cancer rates were as expected, with no consistent exposure-related risks observed.

    Background:

    • Formaldehyde is a common industrial chemical with potential health risks.
    • Previous studies suggested possible links between formaldehyde exposure and certain cancers.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the mortality experience of workers exposed to formaldehyde.
    • To investigate the association between formaldehyde exposure levels and cancer risk.

    Main Methods:

    • A historical cohort study of 26,561 workers in 10 formaldehyde facilities.
    • Follow-up for approximately 600,000 person-years until January 1, 1980.
    • Development of historical formaldehyde exposure estimates by job using monitoring data and worker input.

    Conclusions:

    • The study provides limited evidence of a cancer mortality association with formaldehyde exposure at the levels experienced by these industrial workers.
    • Findings contrast with some animal data and reports on professional groups with formaldehyde exposure.
    • Further research may be needed to clarify risks in specific subgroups or at different exposure levels.
