Summary

Degenerative spinal deformity (DSD) can decrease abdominal cavity volume (ACV), particularly in degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) and degenerative lumbar scoliokyphosis (DKS). Degenerative kyphosis (DK) affects diaphragm rotation but not ACV.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize abdominal changes in DSD patients.
  • To correlate abdominal cavity volume (ACV) with DSD types.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 95 DSD patients and 100 controls.
  • X-ray for spinal angles; MRI for ACV and diaphragm rotation (DR).
  • DSD types: degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS), degenerative kyphosis (DK), and degenerative lumbar scoliokyphosis (DKS).

Main Results:

  • DLS and DKS groups showed smaller ACV than controls.
  • DK and DKS groups had reduced DR compared to DLS.
  • Cobb angle and weight influence ACV; thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK) affects DR.

Conclusions:

  • DLS decreases ACV; DK does not alter ACV but relates to kyphosis degree.
  • DKS impacts both ACV and DR.
  • Spinal deformity significantly affects abdominal cavity dimensions and diaphragm function.
