Background:

Limited data exists on equine euthanasia rates and influencing factors in France.
Understanding end-of-life decisions is crucial for improving equine welfare.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the proportion of euthanized equids in France.
To identify factors associated with euthanasia decisions in equids.

Main Methods:

A web-based survey was distributed to owners reporting equine deaths between April 2017 and April 2018.
Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with euthanasia.

The response rate was 10.6% (548/5158).
Euthanasia accounted for 71.0% of equine deaths.
Age, cause of death/reason for euthanasia, and duration of illness were significant factors (P <0.001).
