    Background:

    • Dentine exhibits regional variations in mineral density.
    • The amelodentinal junction (ADJ) is a critical interface in tooth structure.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantitatively assess and compare the mineral density of circumpulpal dentine and mantle dentine.
    • To investigate the structural characteristics of the ADJ using densitometry and polarized light microscopy.

    Main Methods:

    • Microradiography and densitometric analysis of 50 human tooth sections (aged 18-56).
    • Quantitative analysis using graphic and electronic computer methods.
    • Examination of sections using polarized light microscopy.

    Main Results:

    • Mantle dentine, a peripheral zone averaging 150 microns, showed a lower mineral density (approx. 42% volume) compared to circumpulpal dentine (approx. 46% volume).
    • The 4% difference in mineral density between these regions was statistically significant.
    • Polarized light microscopy confirmed the presence of peripheral mantle dentine.

    Conclusions:

    • Mantle dentine is demonstrably less mineralized than circumpulpal dentine.
    • The findings underscore the structural heterogeneity of dentine and highlight the ADJ as an area requiring further research.
