Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how childhood trauma exposure moderates the relationship between schizotypy and brain morphology.

Main Methods:

  • 160 healthy adults underwent assessment for childhood trauma and schizotypy.
  • Voxel-based morphometry and grey matter volume covariation (GMC) analyses were used.
  • Moderation analyses examined interactions between schizotypy, trauma, and brain structure.

Main Results:

  • Schizotypy dimensions negatively correlated with GMC in the striatum, hippocampus, thalamus, and insula.
  • Trauma exposure was linked to reduced GMC in the frontal gyrus, parietal lobule, and cerebellum.
  • Schizotypy-striatal GMC association was significant only in non-traumatized individuals.

Conclusions:

  • Schizotypy and childhood trauma are independently associated with grey matter alterations.
  • These brain changes affect regions crucial for cognition and social cognition.
  • In non-traumatized individuals, elevated schizotypy relates to decreased striatal and limbic grey matter.
