The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

4.9K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Comparative Pathology

Background:

  • Thyroid adenomas are benign tumors affecting the thyroid gland.
  • While documented in various species, bilateral thyroid adenomas are rare in South American camelids.
  • Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) can develop cervical masses impacting vital structures.

Observation:

  • A 7-year-old male alpaca presented with large, bilateral ventral cervical masses.
  • The masses caused significant esophageal and tracheal impingement.
  • Diagnostic imaging and histopathology confirmed bilateral thyroid adenomas.

Findings:

  • Unilateral chemical ablation using 10% formalin was performed on the left mass.
  • The chemical ablation technique successfully reduced the mass size.
  • No adverse effects were observed post-treatment.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of bilateral thyroid adenomas in an alpaca.
  • Chemical ablation is a viable conservative treatment for alpaca thyroid adenomas.
  • Findings contribute to understanding comparative endocrinology and neoplasia in camelids.
