    Implementing an evidence-based practice model significantly increased human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates in adolescents. This model, combining education and strong provider recommendations, proved effective in overcoming parental hesitancy and boosting vaccine uptake.

    Background:

    • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a leading cause of cervical and other cancers.
    • Low HPV vaccination rates persist in many regions, necessitating effective intervention strategies.
    • Parental hesitancy and lack of strong provider recommendations are significant barriers to HPV vaccine uptake.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To enhance HPV vaccination rates among adolescents.
    • To implement and evaluate a stepwise evidence-based practice model.
    • To address parental hesitancy through targeted education and provider recommendations.

    Main Methods:

    • An evidence-based practice change model was implemented in a rural, nurse practitioner-run clinic.
    • Health care providers delivered HPV education and strong immunization recommendations to parents of adolescents aged 11-17.
    • Parental vaccine hesitancy was assessed using the Parent Attitudes About Childhood Vaccine instrument.

    Main Results:

    • HPV vaccination uptake increased from 4 adolescents in a 6-week period in 2018 to 24 adolescents in the same period in 2019.
    • All 24 eligible adolescents whose parents were approached received the HPV vaccine after the intervention.
    • The intervention demonstrated a substantial improvement in HPV vaccination coverage.

    Conclusions:

    • An evidence-based practice model, including standing vaccine orders and reminders, can effectively increase HPV vaccine series completion.
    • Maximizing every clinical opportunity is crucial to prevent HPV-related cancers and genital warts.
    • This model offers a promising strategy for improving adolescent immunization rates.
