  • To identify and validate plasma metabolites associated with lung function (FEV1 and FEV1/FVC) in adult populations.

  • Utilized linear regression models to analyze 693 metabolites in the discovery cohort (EPIC-Norfolk, n=10,460).
  • Validated significant findings in an independent cohort (NAS, n=437).
  • Adjusted for covariates including age, sex, BMI, height, smoking, and asthma status.

  • 156 metabolites associated with FEV1 in the discovery cohort; 34 (21.8%) validated in the NAS cohort, including those involved in oxidative stress.
  • Fewer metabolites validated for FEV1/FVC (6/65, 9.2%), linked to respiratory track secretants.
  • No metabolites were validated for both FEV1 and FEV1/FVC.

Conclusions:

  • Validated plasma metabolites offer insights into the biochemical mechanisms of lung health.
  • These findings may facilitate the development of novel biomarkers for assessing respiratory function.
