CytoSorb® Hemoadsorption as a Promising Tool to Handle COVID-19-Induced Cytokine Storm

Background:

Observation:

  • A 59-year-old patient with SARS-CoV-2-induced ARDS presented with severe hyperinflammation, hemodynamic instability, and worsening renal failure.
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy combined with CytoSorb® hemoadsorption was initiated to manage the patient's critical condition.

Findings:

  • Hemoadsorption therapy led to immediate control of the patient's hyperinflammatory response.
  • Following treatment, significant improvements in lung function and profound hemodynamic stabilization were observed.
  • The combination therapy effectively managed the SARS-CoV-2-induced cytokine storm syndrome.

Implications:

  • CytoSorb® hemoadsorption, in conjunction with continuous renal replacement therapy, represents a viable therapeutic option for managing severe COVID-19 CRS.
  • This case highlights the potential of extracorporeal hemoadsorption to mitigate organ injury in hyperinflammatory states.
  • Further research into hemoadsorption therapies for cytokine storm syndrome is warranted.
