Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

484
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Summary

Universal suicide risk screening is feasible in pediatric neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) clinics. While many positive screenings occurred, further research is needed to understand variations in risk and improve participation rates.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Medicine
  • Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
  • Mental Health Screening

Background:

  • Suicide is a significant concern in youth, particularly those with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD).
  • Implementing universal suicide risk screening in specialized clinics is crucial for early identification and intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the implementation of universal suicide risk screening in pediatric NDD medical clinics.
  • To analyze patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and screening outcomes.
  • To identify factors influencing screening participation.

Main Methods:

  • Developed and implemented a suicide risk screening protocol for patients aged 8-18 years.
  • Registered nurses utilized the "Ask Suicide-Screening Questions" tool during triage.
  • Conducted retrospective chart reviews for demographic and clinical data.

Main Results:

  • Over 5260 eligible visits, 73.3% of screenings were completed, with 6.8% positive.
  • Screenings were declined in 26.7% of visits; parents of children with cognitive impairments were more likely to decline.
  • Clinics for autism spectrum disorder showed higher positive screening rates; 38.5% of positive cases were referred to mental health services.

Conclusions:

  • Routine suicide risk screening, identification, and referral are feasible in pediatric NDD clinics.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the validity of screening tools and understand variations in suicide risk among youth with NDD.
  • High declination rates may impact the identification of at-risk children, highlighting the need to address participation barriers.
