Background:

  • Limited data exists on SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) vaccine campaign feasibility and acceptance among incarcerated populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a statewide SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) vaccination program for incarcerated individuals and correctional staff.
  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of vaccine implementation in a prison setting.

Main Methods:

  • The Rhode Island Department of Corrections (RIDOC) offered SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) vaccination to all incarcerated individuals and staff between December 2020 and February 2021.
  • Public health educators provided vaccine education and obtained consent from incarcerated individuals.
  • Staff received educational materials and a video, with additional resources distributed via email.

Main Results:

  • During the initial campaign, 76.4% of sentenced individuals and 68.4% of staff accepted the vaccine.
  • Four months post-vaccination offer, 77.7% of the incarcerated population and 69.6% of staff were fully vaccinated.

Conclusions:

  • Vaccine implementation is feasible and efficient within correctional facilities.
  • Effective education and communication strategies likely reduced vaccine hesitancy and refusals.
