Improved emotional processing in therapy is linked to better outcomes for complicated grief. Clients with higher emotional processing showed a shift from maladaptive to adaptive grief emotions, improving their condition.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
- Psychotherapy Research
Background:
- Previous studies on depression indicated a link between emotional processing and therapeutic success.
- The role of emotional processing in complicated grief outcomes remained less understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between emotional processing and therapeutic change in complicated grief.
- To compare emotional processing in cases with good versus poor therapeutic outcomes.
Main Methods:
- A comparative case study of two patients undergoing grief constructivist therapy.
- Analysis of emotional processing (Experiencing Scale) and grief-related emotions (Emotions Episodes) in relation to therapeutic outcomes (Inventory of Complicated Grief).
Main Results:
- The case with a good therapeutic outcome demonstrated greater improvement in emotional processing compared to the poor outcome case.
- Enhanced emotional processing correlated with a transition from maladaptive to adaptive grief-related emotions.
Conclusions:
- Higher emotional processing capability may be associated with transforming maladaptive grief emotions.
- Improved emotional processing appears to be a significant factor in the recovery from complicated grief.
