Fixation stability improvement after occlusion treatment for severe amblyopia

Background:

• Severe amblyopia significantly impairs fixation stability.

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the impact of traditional patching on fixation stability in severe amblyopia.
• To assess the correlation between fixation stability and visual acuity improvement.

Main Methods:

• Eighteen patients with severe unilateral amblyopia underwent 6 hours/day of fellow eye patching.
• Fixation stability was measured using the MP-1 microperimeter and bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA).
• Measurements were taken at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months.

• Fixation stability (BCEA) in amblyopic eyes significantly improved after 6 months of patching (p=0.018).
• Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) also showed significant improvement in amblyopic eyes at 3 and 6 months (p<0.001).
• No significant correlation was found between BCEA and BCVA changes (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

• Traditional patching effectively improves fixation stability in severe amblyopia.
• Improved fixation stability does not directly correlate with visual acuity gains in this cohort.
