Summary
This case study shows that staged surgical repair of bilateral latissimus dorsi tendon ruptures is effective. Patients can achieve excellent clinical and functional outcomes after this procedure.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Sports Medicine
- Musculoskeletal Injuries
Background:
- Latissimus dorsi tendon ruptures are uncommon injuries.
- Bilateral ruptures are exceedingly rare, especially from a single traumatic event like water-skiing.
Observation:
- A 55-year-old male presented with bilateral, complete latissimus dorsi tendon ruptures after a water-skiing accident.
- Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the ruptures and also revealed a concomitant left teres major tear.
Findings:
- The patient underwent staged primary repair of the bilateral latissimus dorsi tendons, with a 6-week interval between surgeries.
- At one-year follow-up, the patient demonstrated excellent clinical outcomes and functional recovery.
Implications:
- Staged surgical repair is a viable and effective treatment option for bilateral latissimus dorsi tendon ruptures.
- This approach can lead to successful restoration of shoulder function in patients with these severe injuries.
