Primary Uterine Hemangiosarcoma in a Thoroughbred: A Case Report.

Summary

This study reports the first equine case of uterine hemangiosarcoma in a young Thoroughbred mare. The rare tumor caused severe pain and discharge, leading to diagnosis and treatment but ultimately postoperative complications.

Background:

Uterine tumors are uncommon in equine species.
Hemangiosarcoma is a rare vascular tumor typically affecting spleen and liver in dogs.

Observation:

A 1.8-year-old Thoroughbred filly presented with vaginal discharge and abdominal pain.
Ultrasonography revealed a large cervical uterine mass with surrounding smaller masses.
The mare spontaneously expelled a uterine mass, which was analyzed.

Findings:

Histological and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed uterine hemangiosarcoma.
Therapeutic hysterectomy was performed, but the mare experienced postoperative complications.
Necropsy revealed intestinal adhesions as the cause of death, with no other neoplastic lesions found.

Implications:

This case represents the first documented instance of uterine hemangiosarcoma in an equine.
Highlights the importance of considering rare tumor types in equine reproductive pathology.
Underscores the potential for severe complications following major abdominal surgery in horses.
