Background:

  • Optic disc pit maculopathy (ODPM) is a rare condition affecting the macula, often leading to visual impairment.
  • Paediatric cases of ODPM present unique challenges in management and visual recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of dual inner retinal fenestration in treating paediatric optic disc pit maculopathy.
  • To assess the anatomical and visual outcomes following this surgical intervention.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective, interventional case series involving paediatric patients with ODPM.
  • Pars plana vitrectomy with creation of two inner retinal fenestrations and endogas tamponade.
  • Assessment of outcomes via optical coherence tomography (OCT) for central retinal thickness and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA).

Main Results:

  • All six eyes showed progressive resolution of intraretinal and subretinal fluid.
  • Significant improvement in central retinal thickness was observed postoperatively (p=0.04).
  • Best-corrected visual acuity improved from logMAR 0.71 preoperatively to logMAR 0.16 at 1 year post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Dual inner retinal fenestration is an effective surgical technique for paediatric ODPM.
  • The procedure successfully resolves fluid and restores vision in affected children.
  • Enabling fluid egress into the vitreous cavity appears to provide long-lasting amelioration of ODPM.
