The ACTN3 R577X gene variant was not associated with sarcopenia in older Turkish adults. Further research is needed to understand how ethnicity influences muscle health and this gene polymorphism in aging populations.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Gerontology
- Physiology
Background:
- Alpha-actinin (ACTN) genes are crucial structural sarcomere components.
- Sarcopenia, a geriatric syndrome, is linked to increased morbidity and mortality.
- Investigating genetic factors like ACTN3 R577X in sarcopenia is vital for understanding aging muscle.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the association between the ACTN3 R577X gene polymorphism and sarcopenia in community-dwelling Turkish older adults.
- To determine if ACTN3 R577X genotype influences muscle mass, strength, or physical performance in this demographic.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 197 Turkish adults aged 65 years and older.
- Handgrip strength measured by Jamar dynamometer; body composition assessed via bioimpedance analysis.
- Sarcopenia diagnosed using EWGSOP2 criteria; ACTN3 R577X genotypes determined from peripheral blood samples.
Main Results:
- The study included 197 participants (76.6% women, mean age 76.3 years).
- ACTN3 genotype frequencies: RX (45.1%), RR (31%), XX (23.9%).
- No significant association found between ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and sarcopenia, probable sarcopenia, or low muscle mass (LMM); only female gender was independently linked to LMM.
Conclusions:
- The ACTN3 R577X gene polymorphism is not associated with sarcopenia or LMM in the studied Turkish population.
- Further research is required to elucidate the impact of ethnicity on muscle characteristics in older adults with ACTN3 R577X polymorphism.

Translation
Translation is the process of synthesizing proteins from the genetic information carried by messenger RNA (mRNA). Following transcription, it constitutes the final step in the expression of genes. This process is carried out by ribosomes, complexes of protein and specialized RNA molecules. Ribosomes, transfer RNA (tRNA), and other proteins produce a chain of amino acids—the polypeptide—as the end product of translation.
