Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Background:

  • Pilot studies suggest visually impaired individuals can learn basic life support (BLS).
  • No prior research has directly compared BLS skill acquisition between blind individuals (BP) and blindfolded individuals (BFP) using identical training protocols.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the ability of blind people (BP) and blindfolded people (BFP) to learn and perform basic life support (BLS) skills.
  • To evaluate the quality of chest compressions (CC), automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and overall BLS sequence performance in both groups.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental trial involving 29 BP and 30 BFP.
  • Participants received 1.5 hours of instructor-led, real-time feedback BLS training.
  • Performance was assessed via a simulation scenario measuring CC quality, AED use, and BLS sequence completion.

Main Results:

  • Both groups demonstrated comparable BLS sequence performance and chest compression quality, with BP showing a faster median time to start CC.
  • A significant difference was observed in compression rate, with BFP having a higher rate than BP (p=0.002).
  • Mean compression depth was suboptimal in both groups, and time to discharge the simulated patient was longer for BFP (p=0.004).

Conclusions:

  • Blind individuals possess comparable abilities to blindfolded individuals in learning and executing basic life support skills after adapted training.
  • The findings support the efficacy of tailored BLS training programs for visually impaired populations.
  • Further research may focus on optimizing compression depth and rate in blind individuals during BLS.
