Polish students possess some knowledge of cervical cancer risk factors and prevention, with medical students showing better understanding. Targeted education is needed for non-medical students to improve early detection and reduce incidence.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Cervical cancer morbidity and mortality rates in Poland are among Europe's highest.
- A significant proportion of cervical cancer cases are diagnosed at advanced stages.
- Low participation rates (around 20%) in cervical cancer screening among Polish women.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the knowledge of Polish university students regarding cervical cancer risk factors.
- To assess students' awareness of cervical cancer prevention strategies, including screening and vaccination.
Main Methods:
- A validated questionnaire was administered to 995 Polish students from various universities and faculties.
- Data were collected between May 2020 and November 2020.
- Chi-square tests were used for statistical comparisons between subgroups.
Main Results:
- Most students identified human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as the primary risk factor (82%).
- Awareness of Poland's national screening program (ages 25-59, every three years) was low (40%).
- Knowledge regarding the absence of early symptoms (57%) and the benefits of HPV vaccination (78%) varied. Medical students and sexually active students demonstrated superior knowledge.
Conclusions:
- Polish students exhibit partial knowledge of cervical cancer risk factors and prevention methods.
- Medical students possess significantly better knowledge compared to non-medical students.
- Enhanced educational initiatives targeting young individuals outside of medical fields are crucial for reducing cervical cancer incidence and improving early detection rates.
