Energy Requirement for Elderly CKD Patients

Managing energy intake is vital for older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Objective measurements revealed lower energy needs than predicted, suggesting lower intake may be adequate for stable CKD patients.

- Current predictive equations overestimate energy requirements in older, stable CKD patients with sedentary lifestyles.
- The NKF-KDOQI guideline of 25-35 Kcal/Kg/d appears more suitable than previous guidelines (30-35 Kcal/Kg/d).
- Energy intake potentially lower than 25 Kcal/Kg/d may be adequate for this population.
