Summary

Structur CAD (SC) is a suitable material for long-term temporary (two years) three-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), showing superior strength and wear resistance compared to VITA CAD-Temp (CT). Most tested materials are suitable for temporary FDP fabrication.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering
  • Prosthodontics

Background:

  • Long-term temporary fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) require durable and stable materials.
  • CAD/CAM resin-based composites offer potential for fabricating such restorations.
  • Evaluating material performance under simulated clinical conditions is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the performance of CAD/CAM resin-based composites for long-term temporary FDPs.
  • To compare the long-term stability of CAD/CAM materials against direct resin composites.
  • To assess fracture load, surface wear, and abrasion resistance.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of three-unit FDPs using four CAD/CAM materials and two direct resin composites.
  • Subjecting FDPs to thermal cycling and mechanical loading (chewing simulation).
  • Measuring fracture loads and analyzing image diagnostics before and after testing.

Main Results:

  • Structur CAD (SC) demonstrated suitability for two-year temporary FDPs, with significantly higher breaking forces (>800 N) than VITA CAD-Temp (CT) (<600 N).
  • SC exhibited lower antagonist wear and similar FDP abrasion compared to CT.
  • Grandio disc (GD) and Lava Esthetic (LE) showed high breaking forces (1100-1327 N), indicating potential for three-unit FDPs. All materials except Structur 3 (S3) were suitable for temporary FDPs.

Conclusions:

  • Structur CAD is a viable option for long-term temporary three-unit fixed dental prostheses.
  • CAD/CAM materials generally offer superior performance for temporary FDPs compared to some direct resin composites.
  • Further research into material longevity and clinical application is warranted.
