Retroviruses are RNA viruses that have been shown to cause cancers in diverse species, including chickens, mice, cats, and monkeys. Summary

Human papillomavirus (HPV) was found in 18.7% of sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) cases, increasing recurrence risk. Attachment-oriented resection reduced recurrence rates significantly.

Background:

  • Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) is a benign tumor with a high recurrence rate.
  • The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in SNIP pathogenesis and recurrence is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the occurrence of HPV in SNIP.
  • To identify factors associated with HPV positivity and SNIP recurrence.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective collection of clinical data and tissue specimens from 90 SNIP patients.
  • HPV analysis of 107 SNIP specimens.
  • Assessment of factors linked to recurrence and HPV positivity.

Main Results:

  • HPV was detected in 18.7% of SNIP specimens (13.1% low-risk, 5.6% high-risk).
  • HPV positivity correlated with increased SNIP recurrence risk (P=.004).
  • Smoking was associated with HPV positivity (P=.01); attachment-oriented resection significantly lowered recurrence rates (25.8% vs 78.6%).

Conclusions:

  • HPV positivity and lack of attachment-oriented resection are significant risk factors for SNIP recurrence.
  • Oncogenic HPV is uncommon in SNIP.
