Preventive Healthcare Services01:30

Preventive Healthcare Services

1.2K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Mutations01:35

Mutations

41.4K
Mutations are changes in the sequence of DNA. These changes can occur spontaneously or they can be induced by exposure to environmental factors. Mutations can be characterized in a number of different ways: whether and how they alter the amino acid sequence of the protein, whether they occur over a small or large area of DNA, and whether they occur in somatic cells or germline cells.

Pigmentation01:19

Pigmentation

3.4K
The color of the skin is influenced by a number of pigments, including melanin, carotene, and hemoglobin. Recall that melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes, which are found scattered throughout the stratum basale of the epidermis. The melanin is transferred to the keratinocytes via melanosomes.
Melanin occurs in two primary forms: eumelanin that provides black and brown pigment and pheomelanin that provides red color. Dark-skinned individuals produce more melanin than those with pale...

Role of Skin in Vitamin D Synthesis01:23

Role of Skin in Vitamin D Synthesis

6.3K
The skin plays a crucial role in the synthesis of vitamin D, a vital nutrient for various physiological processes in the body. Vitamin D is unique because it can be synthesized in the skin through a series of chemical reactions triggered by exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from sunlight.
The solar UV B rays (290-315 nm) are absorbed by the skin, and 7-dehydrocholesterol (provitamin D3) photolyzes it to previtamin D3, which undergoes a rapid transformation to vitamin...

Cancer Prevention02:59

Cancer Prevention

6.4K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention01:26

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

13.7K
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

Summary

Regular sunscreen use shows significant benefits in preventing actinic keratoses, squamous cell carcinoma, and photoaging. Further research is needed for basal cell carcinoma, but sunscreens remain a recommended second-line UV protection measure.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Preventive Medicine

Background:

  • Skin tumors are the most common cancers in Germany, with over 200,000 new cases annually.
  • Evidence regarding the preventive efficacy of regular sunscreen use requires systematic summarization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review current evidence on the preventive value of regular sunscreen use.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of sunscreens against epithelial skin cancer, actinic keratosis, and photoaging.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature review of controlled and randomized controlled trials.
  • Searches were conducted in Ovid Embase and Ovid Medline databases.
  • Studies included were published up to January 21, 2020, focusing on human subjects.

Main Results:

  • Four studies on actinic keratoses demonstrated significant benefits of sunscreen use.
  • Two studies on squamous cell carcinoma showed significant protective effects.
  • Two studies on photoaging reported significant reductions, while basal cell carcinoma studies showed non-significant protective trends.

Conclusions:

  • Evidence for sunscreen efficacy is limited, particularly for basal cell carcinoma, necessitating further high-quality studies.
  • Current UV protection recommendations remain unchanged.
  • Sunscreens are advised as a secondary measure for UV protection when other methods are insufficient.
