The use of animals in education

Abstract:
Animals are used at all levels of education to develop attitudes, knowledge and skills in science and other subjects. Decisions on what use is essential are made more by force of authority of those experienced in education, than by force of analysable published evidence, of which there is too little. Ethical views and the extent to which "models" may be effective in replacing "hands-on" experience are discussed.
