Area of Science:

  • Integrative and Complementary Medicine
  • Sexual Health
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background:

  • Sexual dysfunction significantly impacts quality of life and relationships.
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine, including acupuncture, is increasingly explored for its therapeutic potential.
  • Acupuncture is hypothesized to positively influence sexual function.

Approach:

  • A systematic review was conducted to evaluate acupuncture's efficacy and safety for sexual dysfunction.
  • Extensive literature searches were performed across multiple databases up to 2021.
  • The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used to assess study quality.

Key Points:

  • Thirteen studies were included, examining acupuncture's effects on sexual dysfunction.
  • Acupuncture demonstrated improvements in desire, libido, erectile dysfunction, and impotency.
  • Most studies reported no serious adverse events, with only minor side effects noted.

Conclusions:

  • Acupuncture appears to be a safe and effective treatment for improving various aspects of sexual dysfunction.
  • While promising, the current evidence base for acupuncture's efficacy in sexual dysfunction lacks high methodological quality.
  • Further rigorous research is warranted to solidify acupuncture's role in managing sexual dysfunction.
