Summary

This study found that approximately one-quarter of COVID-19 survivors develop telogen effluvium (TE), a type of hair loss. This post-viral hair shedding, termed COVID-19 associated TE (CATE), occurred about 7-8 weeks after infection and was more common in women and those with hypertension or respiratory symptoms.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of TE in patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  • To correlate TE development with COVID-19 severity.
  • To investigate the roles of emotional stress and medications in post-COVID-19 TE.

Main Methods:

  • A study included 204 patients with recent SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  • TE diagnosis involved hair shedding history, hair pull tests, and trichoscopy.
  • COVID-19 associated TE (CATE) was defined as TE with no other identifiable cause post-infection.

Main Results:

  • TE was observed in 36.7% of patients; CATE was present in 27.9%.
  • CATE onset averaged 53.76 days post-RT-PCR positivity, with higher incidence in women, hypertensive patients, and those with respiratory symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • TE affects approximately a quarter of COVID-19 survivors, with onset around 7-8 weeks post-infection.
  • Severe COVID-19 may increase susceptibility to TE.
  • Clinicians should consider prior SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients presenting with hair loss, especially those with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), which correlates with more severe COVID-19.
