Digital Health Adoption

Background:

Digital health adoption in healthcare lags behind other industries due to complex incentive structures.
Misalignment exists between investor ROI and patient/caregiver value, hindering widespread technology implementation.
Understanding and addressing these misalignments is crucial for accelerating digital health transformation.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the challenges in digital health adoption from a clinician's perspective.
To analyze the balance between the perceived value and implementation effort of digital health tools.
To identify key elements for successful change initiatives in digital health.

Main Methods:

Comparative case study analysis of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) adoption (2009-2015) and virtual care technology adoption (2020-2021) in Canada.
Examination of clinician experiences and the impact of change initiatives on adoption rates.
Review of factors influencing adoption, including financial support, stakeholder cooperation, clinical workflows, and payment models.

Main Results:

Canada's slow EMR adoption was overcome by multi-level government and stakeholder cooperation addressing misaligned incentives.
Rapid virtual care adoption during COVID-19 highlighted the importance of aligning clinical workflows, appropriateness, integration, and payment models.
In both cases, adoption efforts initially outweighed direct clinician value, necessitating targeted change initiatives.
