Cell composition at the vitreomacular interface in traumatic macular holes

Traumatic macular holes (TMH) have fewer glial cells at the vitreomacular interface (VMI) compared to idiopathic macular holes (IMH). This difference in VMI characteristics may aid in understanding macular hole pathogenesis.

- Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against microglial and macroglial cells; clinical data was retrospectively reviewed.
Main Results:
- TMH specimens exhibited reduced immunoreactivity for glial markers (glutamine synthetase, vimentin, IBA1) and lower cell counts compared to IMH.
- All observed cells were located on the vitreal side of the internal limiting membrane; no collagen fibrils were found in TMH samples.
- A majority of TMH cases (60%) showed an attached posterior vitreous, contrasting with all IMH cases which presented with posterior vitreous detachment.
Conclusions:
- Significant differences exist in the VMI between TMH and IMH.
- Glial cell presence on the vitreal side of the internal limiting membrane is notably reduced in TMH.
