Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Mental Health
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Trauma Studies

Background:

  • Adversity and trauma are linked to increased suicidal ideation and behaviors.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy for trauma.
  • Preliminary evidence suggests EMDR's utility in acute suicidal patients, with positive informal reports on web-based delivery during COVID-19.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if remotely delivered EMDR reduces suicidal thoughts in adults.
  • To assess the impact of remote EMDR on depression, anxiety, PTSD, emotional dysregulation, and dissociation.
  • To evaluate the safety of EMDR for suicidal ideation and compare dropout rates between groups.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 80 adults with suicidal ideation.
  • Participants received either 12 sessions of remote EMDR plus treatment as usual or treatment as usual alone.
  • Data collection at baseline, 2 months, and 4 months, with future analysis of healthcare utilization.

Main Results:

  • The study protocol was approved by the University of Alberta Research Health Ethics Board.
  • Funding was secured from the Mental Health Foundation.
  • Recruitment commenced in May 2021, with an anticipated completion in March 2023.

Conclusions:

  • This trial will provide crucial data on the effectiveness of web-based EMDR for reducing suicidal ideation.
  • Results will contribute to understanding the safety and efficacy of remote EMDR interventions for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts.
  • The findings may inform the potential reduction of suicide attempts through accessible online therapy.
