Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents unique challenges for auditory development and communication.
  • Cochlear implantation (CI) is a potential intervention for hearing loss in children with ASD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of cochlear implantation (CI) in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review of studies was conducted following PRISMA guidelines.
  • Databases searched included MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov.
  • Primary outcomes: speech perception and production. Secondary outcomes: communication mode, device use, parental recommendation, hyperacusis, and quality of life.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-four studies involving 159 children with ASD were analyzed.
  • Improvements in speech perception (78%) and expression (63%) were observed, though variable.
  • Seventy-four percent of children with ASD and CI were non-oral communicators, with a 31% intermittent/nonuse rate.

Conclusions:

  • Outcomes for children with ASD receiving CI are highly variable and generally poorer than in non-ASD children.
  • Despite challenges, the majority of parents reported positive experiences, supporting CI use in this population.
