Purpose of the Study:

  • To clarify a possible association between hyperhidrosis and dementia in adults aged 65 and older in China.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey of 5,958 elderly adults (≥65 years) in China was conducted.
  • Logistic and linear regression analyses were employed to assess the association between HH and dementia.
  • Goodness-of-fit tests were used to ensure model adequacy.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of all-cause dementia was 10.17%, dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) was 1.41%, and HH was 14.97%.
  • Participants with HH showed higher prevalence rates of dementia and DLB.
  • HH was associated with a 1.275 times higher likelihood of dementia and a 3.616 times higher likelihood of DLB.

Conclusions:

  • Hyperhidrosis is common in the Chinese elderly population (≥65 years).
  • Hyperhidrosis increases the risk of dementia, particularly DLB, in the elderly.
  • Enhanced awareness of HH among dermatologists and neurologists is recommended.
