This study investigated NOx emissions in nonroad engines using pilot injection and ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH₃-SCR). Combining both technologies reduced NOx, but less effectively than using them separately.
Area of Science:
- Internal Combustion Engines
- Emission Control Technologies
Background:
- Nonroad compression ignition engines face stringent NOx emission regulations.
- Pilot injection and NH₃-SCR are key technologies for NOx reduction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare NOx emissions using pilot injection and NH₃-SCR separately and combined.
- To analyze the interaction between pilot injection and NH₃-SCR under various operating conditions.
Main Methods:
- Engine experiments were conducted on a nonroad compression ignition engine.
- Varied pilot injection parameters (interval, fuel amount) and NH₃-SCR system.
- Evaluated NOx emissions across a range of engine loads.
Main Results:
- Pilot injection fuel amount significantly impacts NOx emissions, with smaller amounts yielding lower emissions.
- Lower engine loads showed greater NOx variation with pilot injection adjustments.
- Combined pilot injection and NH₃-SCR resulted in lower overall NOx reduction than individual applications.
Conclusions:
- Pilot injection's effectiveness in NOx reduction is load-dependent, enhancing at lower loads.
- The synergy between pilot injection and NH₃-SCR is complex and load-sensitive.
- Optimizing pilot injection parameters is crucial for effective NOx control.
