Stroke patterns and cannulation strategy during veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane support

Stroke risk is similar across different arterial cannulation sites for veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane support (VA-ECMO). This study found no significant difference in stroke incidence based on ascending aorta, axillary artery, or femoral artery cannulation.

- Ischemic stroke is the predominant stroke subtype in patients undergoing VA-ECMO.
- Further research may explore other factors contributing to stroke in this patient population.
