Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential risk factors associated with subjective cognitive decline (SCD).
  • To identify factors contributing to both the presence and severity of SCD.
  • To provide insights for early prevention strategies for SCD.

Main Methods:

  • Logistic and linear regression models were employed to analyze 41 potential factors in 1165 participants without objective cognitive impairment.
  • Cochran-Armitage trend test was utilized to assess the relationship between the number of risk factors and SCD prevalence.
  • Prevalence and severity of SCD were evaluated in relation to identified risk factors.

Main Results:

  • A high overall prevalence of SCD was observed (42%).
  • Eight risk factors for SCD were identified: older age, thyroid diseases, minimal anxiety symptoms, daytime dysfunction, female sex, anemia, lack of physical exercise, and living alone.
  • SCD prevalence increased significantly with the number of co-occurring risk factors (p for trend <0.001).
  • Five of these factors were also significant in individuals with SCD-plus features.

Conclusions:

  • Several modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors contribute to subjective cognitive decline (SCD).
  • The clustering of risk factors is associated with increased SCD prevalence and severity.
  • These findings offer valuable clues for developing targeted strategies for the early prevention of SCD and potential Alzheimer's disease.
