Summary

This study found no significant link between keratoconus (KC) and shoulder dislocation. Research on 238 patients indicates that these conditions do not appear to be associated, despite theories about shared collagen characteristics.

Background:

  • Limited research exists on the correlation between keratoconus (KC) and shoulder dislocation.
  • Previous hypotheses suggested a potential association due to shared collagen characteristics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between keratoconus (KC) and shoulder dislocation.
  • To compare the frequency of shoulder dislocation in patients with KC versus a control group.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted at Jordan University Hospital.
  • Included 238 participants: 120 with KC and 118 controls, matched for age and sex.
  • Diagnosis of KC confirmed using Pentacam; ophthalmic and orthopedic assessments were performed.

Main Results:

  • A total of 238 patients (mean age 29.53 years; 60.5% male) were analyzed.
  • Only 4.6% of participants reported a history of shoulder dislocation.
  • No statistically significant difference in shoulder dislocation frequency was observed between KC patients and controls (p = 0.512).

Conclusions:

  • This study provides evidence against an association between shoulder dislocation and keratoconus.
  • The findings do not support the presumed link based on shared collagen properties.
