Restless Leg Syndrome and Night Terrors01:27

Restless Leg Syndrome and Night Terrors

284
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a neurological disorder characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs due to uncomfortable sensations. These sensations typically occur during periods of rest or inactivity, particularly when lying down or sitting, and can severely disrupt sleep.
The exact cause of RLS is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate muscle movement. Imbalances in dopamine levels...

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder

488
REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by the absence of muscle paralysis that normally occurs during the REM phase of sleep. This absence allows individuals to physically act out their dreams, which are often vivid and disturbing. Common behaviors exhibited during episodes include kicking, punching, and yelling. These actions can be dangerous, potentially leading to injuries for the person with RBD or their bed partner.
RBD is significantly associated with...

Peripheral Arterial Disease II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Evaluation

Clinical manifestationsPeripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) manifests through a range of symptoms, from the characteristic intermittent claudication to atypical presentations and severe complications in advanced stages. Intermittent claudication, a hallmark symptom of PAD, presents as exercise-induced muscle pain that typically resolves within minutes of rest. This pain is reproducible and stems from inadequate blood flow, leading to the accumulation of lactic acid produced during anaerobic...

Assessing Blood pressure in the Leg01:11

Assessing Blood pressure in the Leg

5.2K
Proper measurement of leg blood pressure is a critical skill for healthcare providers, ensuring precise and reliable readings. When performed correctly, this procedure informs patient care and enhances the efficacy of interventions. The following text outlines step-by-step guidelines to measure blood pressure in the leg, providing clarity and ease of understanding for practitioners.

Varicose Veins II: Diagnostic Studies and Interprofessional Care

48
Varicose veins, or varicosities, develop when the valves in the veins, which control blood flow, weaken or damage. It causes blood to pool and the veins to enlarge. Understanding the clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management options for varicose veins is crucial for effective treatment and relief.Clinical manifestationsClinical manifestations of varicose veins include a heavy, achy feeling or pain after prolonged standing or sitting. This discomfort can often be relieved by...

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) affects 14.3% of patients seeing their GP, significantly more than in the general population. RLS is commonly linked with irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, and chronic muscle/back pain.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • General Practice
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) prevalence in the general adult population is 5-10%.
    • Limited research exists on RLS prevalence among patients consulting general practitioners (GPs).
    • Few studies have explored associations between RLS and common conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Chronic Fatigue (CF), and Chronic Muscle and Back Pain (CMBP).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of RLS in patients visiting their GP.
    • To investigate the association between RLS and IBS, CF, and CMBP in this patient group.

    Main Methods:

    • A questionnaire survey was conducted in Southern and Western Norway (2017-2018).
    • 2,634 patients waiting to see their GP participated (response rate 86.8%).
    • RLS was diagnosed using international criteria; associations were analyzed using chi-squared tests and logistic regression.

    Main Results:

    • The prevalence of RLS among patients consulting their GP was 14.3%.
    • RLS was significantly more prevalent in patients with IBS (21.8%), CF (18.2%), and CMBP (23.2%) compared to those without these conditions.
    • A high percentage of RLS patients (44.8%) reported distressing symptoms, and most (85.8%) were not using medication for RLS.

    Conclusions:

    • The prevalence of RLS is notably higher in primary care patients than in the general population.
    • GPs should recognize the increased likelihood of RLS in patients presenting with IBS, CF, or CMBP.
    • Awareness of these associations can improve diagnosis and management of RLS in primary care settings.
