A Multi-Modal Approach to Assessing Recovery in Youth Athletes Following Concussion

Background:

Students often return to school post-concussion with unresolved symptoms and inadequate formal support.
Lack of structured support can impede academic and cognitive recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate concussion symptoms and academic accommodations using a four-week student-centered return to learn (RTL) care plan.
To assess the effectiveness of a structured RTL approach in managing student recovery.

Main Methods:

Five public high schools implemented the RTL care plan for students reporting concussions.
Student-level data on symptoms, academic accommodations, and their provision were collected and analyzed.
Data tracked symptom progression and accommodation use over four weeks.

Main Results:

55% of 115 students utilized the RTL plan for 3-4 weeks.
Students using the plan longer reported more symptoms and higher severity at week one.
1,127 accommodations were provided weekly; emotional symptoms, though least reported, received accommodations most frequently (82%).

Conclusions:

The RTL care plan effectively supports students' return to learn post-concussion.
This structured approach aids in identifying students needing prolonged academic and symptom management support.
