  • Respondents from high reporting LGAs exhibited slightly higher affection and stronger subjective norms regarding animals compared to those from low reporting LGAs.
  • No significant differences in overall affection, animal valuation, or concern for mistreatment were found between regional areas (high prevalence) and others.
  • Regional differences emerged in attitudes toward caring for one's own animals and species-specific concern for mistreatment. Gender also showed common effects.

Conclusions:

  • Community attitudes partially reflect animal mistreatment prevalence and reporting rates, but exhibit significant complexity.
  • Intervention programs require precise targeting of audience, behavior, and species.
  • Tailored interventions focusing on the unique perspectives of smaller regions are likely more effective than broad campaigns.
