Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Avoidant01:26

Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Avoidant

259
Narcissistic and avoidant personality traits represent two contrasting patterns of behavior that significantly influence social interactions and self-perception. While individuals with narcissistic disorder seek admiration and validation, individuals with avoidant personality disorder withdraw due to fear of judgment.
Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Narcissistic individuals exhibit an inflated sense of self-importance and an excessive need for admiration. They are often...

Factors Influencing Attraction VI: Personality Traits

17
Personality traits are fundamental in shaping social perception and influencing interpersonal relationships. Certain traits, such as agreeableness and extraversion, contribute positively to social interactions, whereas others, such as narcissism, have complex and often contradictory effects on how individuals are perceived over time. The Role of Agreeableness and ExtraversionAgreeableness and extraversion are associated with higher levels of interpersonal attractiveness and likability.

Dark Triad and Person Perception

20
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

725
Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

Traits and States

333
Personality traits represent consistent patterns in behavior, thoughts, and emotions, reflecting an individual's tendencies across various situations. For example, extraversion, a well-known trait, manifests in individuals as talkative, energetic, and enthusiastic behaviors. These traits are stable over time, offering a reliable framework for predicting how people might act in different contexts. However, they do not define every moment of an individual's life. In contrast to traits,...

Information Processing Approach

212
The information-processing theory of cognitive development centers on fundamental mental processes, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. Researchers in this field examine how cognitive abilities, such as working memory, evolve and influence children's overall development. Studies indicate that children with stronger working memory tend to excel in reading comprehension, math, and problem-solving compared to peers with less efficient memory skills. Low working memory is...

Summary

Subclinical narcissistic traits in healthy individuals did not show a significant association with working memory performance across multiple tests. Further research is needed to explore cognitive functioning in narcissism.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Science

Background:

  • Personality disorders, including narcissism, are linked to cognitive impairments.
  • The relationship between subclinical narcissistic traits and cognitive functioning in non-clinical populations remains unclear.
  • Some studies suggest potential cognitive benefits with mild narcissistic features.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between subclinical narcissistic features and working memory performance in healthy adults.
  • To determine if narcissistic traits correlate with specific executive functions, such as working memory.
  • To contribute to the understanding of cognitive profiles in subclinical narcissism.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed working memory using Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS/WIE) subtests (Arithmetic, Digit Span, Letter-Number Sequencing) in 70 healthy subjects.
  • Measured narcissistic features using the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ) entitlement/grandiosity subscale, and Schema Mode Inventory (SMI) self-aggrandizer subscale.
  • Employed correlational analyses to examine relationships between cognitive performance and narcissistic measures.

Main Results:

  • Nominally significant positive correlations were observed between WIE Arithmetic performance and NPI total score (rho=0.208, p=0.043) and SMI self-aggrandizer scale (rho=0.231, p=0.027).
  • These findings did not remain significant after false discovery rate (FDR) adjustment for multiple comparisons (pFDR=0.189 and pFDR=0.243).
  • No consistent association was found between narcissistic traits and working memory across all tested measures.

Conclusions:

  • The study did not establish a significant link between subclinical narcissistic traits and working memory performance in healthy individuals.
  • Findings suggest that previous observations might not generalize across different working memory tasks or measures of narcissism.
  • Further research with larger cohorts, diverse executive functions, and a wider range of narcissistic expressions is warranted.
