Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Abdominal Surgery

Background:

  • Elevated serum CA 125 antigen levels can indicate ovarian carcinoma.
  • Peritoneal tuberculosis is an uncommon condition that can present with nonspecific symptoms.

Observation:

  • A 62-year-old woman presented with elevated CA 125 levels, initially suspected as ovarian cancer.
  • Laparotomy revealed peritoneal tuberculosis instead of malignancy.

Findings:

  • Postoperative treatment with bacteriocidal chemotherapeutic agents led to normalization of CA 125 levels.
  • The patient remained clinically well for 24 months following treatment.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering tuberculosis in the differential diagnosis of elevated CA 125 and suspected ovarian cancer.
